Hemet Woman Killed in Head-on Crash on Highway 79

highway-79.jpgA 39-year-old Hemet tragically died last week when the vehicle she was driving was struck head-on by an oncoming vehicle, the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner reported in a press release. The fatal accident occurred on Monday, August 23, 2010, at about 7:00 a.m. on the Ramona Expressway, about ¾ of a mile west of Warren Avenue in San Jacinto.

The victim, Veronica Ochoa, was driving westbound on Highway 79, when, according to the CHP, an eastbound vehicle drifted into the path of her vehicle, causing a head-on collision. The 22-year-old driver of the eastbound vehicle, a resident of Yucca Valley, was taken to Riverside County Regional Medical Center for a possible broken foot. Ochoa was also taken to Riverside County Regional Center in Moreno Valley, where she died at 8:18 a.m.

Cause of the Highway 79 Head-on Collision

The California Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the cause of the Riverside County crash. If news reports in the Valley Chronicle are accurate, it appears that the driver of the eastbound vehicle may have caused the crash. It is unclear whether he was distracted or impaired, or if something malfunctioned mechanically in his vehicle that caused it to drift into oncoming traffic. The CHP will undoubtedly look at these and other factors in determining exactly what happened and why.

Potential Wrongful Death Liability

In situations such as this one, where a motorist is a victim of a fatal head-on collision that was likely not her fault, the family members of the victim may benefit from speaking to a knowledgeable California wrongful death lawyer. An attorney can help the family understand and protect their legal rights to compensation for their loss. Although no amount of money could ever undo the pain of losing a loved one unexpectedly, a wrongful death claim can hold an at-fault party financially responsible for their actions, and provide the family with money for funeral and burial expenses, the anticipated future financial income and earnings of the victim, and compensation for loss of love, care, solace and companionship. An experienced lawyer can explain the unique legal issues of a potential claim, and advise the family of their best course of action to protect their rights going forward.

One Person Killed, Eight Injured in Head-On Collision near Valyermo

A violent head-on crash Friday afternoon in eastern Los Angeles County tragically left one person dead and eight others injured, the Southwest Riverside News Network reported. The accident occurred on Valyermo Road east of 157th Street East at about 2:57 p.m. Friday. According to reports by the CHP, a 1987 Honda According was travelling west on Valyermo Road, while at the same time, a 1991 Mitsubishi Mirage was travelling eastbound.

valyermo-road-eb.jpgThe driver of the Honda, Jonathan Maze, 19, of Palmdale, apparently failed to make the curve, and drifted into eastbound lanes where the Honda collided head-on with the Mitsubishi Mirage. The impact caused the Honda Accord to overturn.

One of the passengers, a 25-year-old Palmdale man, died of his injuries at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Honda suffered major injuries and was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital. Two children in the vehicle, an 11-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy, were taken to Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. The five occupants of the Mitsubishi, all from Littlerock, were taken to Antelope Valley area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Cause of the Valyermo Road Crash

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. Based on the news reports, it appears that the driver of the westbound Honda Accord likely caused this crash, by failing to negotiate the turn. According to the CHP, speed was a factor in the collision.

Two Killed, Two Injured in Interstate 10 Head-On Collision

i-10-blythe-eb.jpgTwo women died Saturday in a violent head-on collision on Interstate 10 near Blythe, the Desert Sun reported. The July 17th accident occurred at about 9:40 a.m. on westbound I-10, approximately three miles east of Corn Springs Road. According to news reports, Kimiko Kamita, 79, of Scottsdale Arizona, was driving her 2005 Toyota Avalon eastbound on Interstate 10, when for unknown reasons, her vehicle crossed the median into westbound traffic, where it collided head-on with a pickup truck.

Kimiko Kamita was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center, where she died shortly before 11:30 a.m. The driver of the 2006 Ford pickup truck, Eduardo Del Toro, 61, of Queen Creek, Arizona, suffered only minor injuries. A passenger in the vehicle, Ofelia Tallon, 83, of Queen Creek, was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where she died around 1:30 p.m.. A 53-year-old woman in the Ford pickup truck suffered major injuries and was also taken to Desert Regional Medical Center. The CHP reported all of the parties involved in the Riverside County crash were wearing their seatbelts.

Cause of the Crash

If news reports are accurate, it appears that this accident was the result of the driver of the Avalon losing control of her vehicle and ending up going in the wrong direction on Interstate 10. The CHP is looking into why this occurred, and whether the accident was caused by the driver herself, or a defect or malfunction in her vehicle, or even possibly a dangerous condition on the highway that caused her to lose control of the car.

Personal Injury and Wrongful Death Liability

Based on the limited information provided in news reports, it is not clear who caused this accident, although it is evident that the driver of the pickup truck was not responsible. While the crash remains under investigation, the family of the victims in the Ford truck would be well-advised to talk to a California personal injury lawyer about the unique legal issues (including possible auto defect issues) of this Interstate 10 accident and protecting their rights in a personal injury or wrongful death claim. If the accident was the result of a malfunction in the Toyota, the manufacturer could be responsible and liable for the injuries and deaths of all involved parties.

Landers Man Killed in Head-on Collision in Twentynine Palms

bagdad-highway-eb.jpgA 46-year-old Landers man tragically died in a head-on collision in Twentynine Palms Monday, the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department reported in a press release. The July 19th accident occurred at about 1:15 p.m. on Bagdad Highway between Double D Ranch Road and Amboy Road. According to news reports, Arthur Vanhofwegen, 77, was driving a northbound Dodge Caravan on Baghad Highway, while at the same time Michael Ray Amdahl, 46, of Landers, was driving a 1997 Nissan Sentra southbound. The two vehicles collided head-on.

Emergency responders transported Amdahl to the Robert E. Bush Naval Hospital in Twentynine Palms, where he died shortly before 3 p.m. Vanhofwegen and a 10-year-old girl in his vehicle were both taken to Desert Regional Medical Center.

Cause of the Head-on Collision

Based on the news reports, it is not clear what exactly happened in this undoubtedly horrific crash. Did Amdahl drift into the path of the Dodge Caravan, or did Vanhofwegen drift into the path of the Nissan Sentra? The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident. Most head-on collision crashes are identified as either "lane-departure" crashes, where a driver either drifts across traffic or makes an unsafe passing maneuver, or "wrong-way" crashes, where a driver is simply driving on the wrong side of the road (often due to alcohol or drugs). In this case, because there was no center line dividing the road, it is difficult to tell what exactly happened.

Possible Wrongful Death Liability

If it happens that the driver of the Dodge Caravan is determined to have caused this car crash, he may be financially liable for the wrongful death of Michael Ray Amdahl. While this fatal July 19th San Bernardino County accident remains under investigation, the family members of the victim would be well-advised to contact an experienced San Bernardino wrongful death attorney about this crash, and the unique legal issues involved. A lawyer can help the victim's family understand and protect their legal rights, and advise them of their best course of action to handle communications with the insurance companies going forward.

Two People Killed, One Critically Injured in Head-On Crash on PCH in Malibu

july16malibucrash.jpgA high-speed head-on collision early Friday morning left two people dead and one person critically injured, the Los Angeles Times reported. According to Mercury News, authorities were investigating whether one of the drivers deliberately caused the crash by driving the wrong-way (eastbound in the westbound lanes) at high speeds on Pacific Coast Highway (State Route 1). The collision, which involved a Saturn and a Ford Mustang, occurred near Zuma View Place at 12:42 a.m.

Authorities believe the Saturn sedan was travelling the wrong way, going eastbound in the westbound lanes, at speeds of more than 80 mph. Two women in another vehicle that was not involved in the collision said that moments before the crash, the Saturn had made a sudden U-turn and apparently deliberately drove toward their vehicle. They were able to avoid crashing into the Saturn, but it collided with the Mustang moments later.

Both vehicles burst into flames upon impact, and both the driver of the Saturn and the driver of the Ford Mustang were killed. A 24-year-old passenger in the Mustang suffered serious injuries, including a broken leg, a broken arm, and a head injury. The two occupants of the Mustang were reportedly naval officers from the Port Hueneme base.

Cause of the Fatal PCH Crash

If news reports are accurate, the driver of the Mustang caused this fatal head-on collision, and authorities are looking at whether the driver of the Saturn was trying to commit suicide. However, the cause of the crash still remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. A CHP spokesman said the driver of the Saturn, whose name was not released, was believed to be from Minnesota. According to Mercury News, friends of the driver of the Saturn reportedly told the agency that the young man had a drinking problem and that his brother had died recently. This Los Angeles County accident is devastating on many levels, not just because two people died, but because the accident could have been so easily prevented.

Wrongful Death and Personal Injury Liability

Numerous unique legal issues arise when a driver that causes a crash is also killed in a collision. While this crash remains under investigation, the family members of the two occupants of the Mustang would be well-advised to talk to an experienced Los Angeles accident attorney as soon as possible, who can help them protect their rights following this tragic head-on collision. A skilled attorney can advise the families of how to handle communications with the insurance companies to ensure they receive the maximum financial compensation resulting from this accident and the wrongful death and serious personal injuries it caused.

Woman Seriously Injured in Head-On Collision Caused by Sleepy Driver on Highway 395

395-shield.gifHighway 395 was shut down Thursday morning after a head-on collision in Victorville, the Victorville Daily Press Reported. The July 15th crash occurred at about 7 a.m. near Bear Valley Road. Two vehicles were involved in the collision, a northbound Hyundai Sonata and a southbound Kia Sportage, sheriff's officials said. According to news reports, the driver of the Hyundai Sonata, a 27-year-old Rancho Cucamonga man, apparently fell asleep while driving. His northbound vehicle crossed into southbound lanes and collided head-on with the Kia Sportage, driven by a 31-year-old Adelanto woman.

The driver of the Hyundai suffered only minor injuries and was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. The woman driving the Kia suffered multiple bone fractures to her lower extremities and was taken to Desert Valley Medical Center.

Cause of the Crash

The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the cause of the head-on collision. However, if news reports in the Press-Enterprise, the Victorville Daily Press and the San Bernardino Sun are accurate, the Rancho Cucamonga man driving the Hyundai caused this Highway 395 accident by allowing himself to fall asleep while driving.

Falling Asleep at the Wheel and Personal Injury Liability

Falling asleep at the wheel is reckless and dangerous. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), at least 1,500 people are killed and 71,000 people are injured each year in accidents attributed to fatigue, drowsiness, or falling asleep at the wheel. When another driver's negligent or reckless actions result in serious injury to another, that driver may be liable for the victim's serious injuries.

While this Highway 395 crash remains under investigation by law enforcement, the family of the Adelanto woman seriously hurt in this head-on collision would be well-advised to contact a San Bernardino personal injury lawyer as soon as possible. A skilled lawyer who has represented numerous victims of head-on collisions in this dangerous stretch of Highway 395 can help the victim protect her legal rights and obtain maximum, full and fair compensation for her medical expenses, lost earnings related to the accident, and pain and suffering.

One Person Killed, Family Injured in Head-On Collision in City of Industry

vllybvldindustry-eb.jpgAuthorities are investigating exactly what happened in a violent head-on car crash Tuesday night in the City of Industry. The accident occurred at about 7 p.m. on an overpass on Valley Boulevard near Stimson Avenue. According to Los Angeles County Sheriff's investigators, a Jeep Cherokee sport utility vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic before it struck an oncoming Ford Taurus head-on.

The man driving the Ford Taurus was killed. His wife and two children suffered critical injuries. CBS 2 reported that at least four people were airlifted from the crash, and that the blame was placed on the 25-year-old man driving the SUV, a Jeep Cherokee. The SUV reportedly crossed the median at about 65 mph. Witnesses speculated that the teen driver of the SUV may have been drunk. It was originally reported that a child had died in the accident, but sheriff's officials said that the initial reports were not correct.

The driver of the Jeep, Omar Vivar, 25, of La Puente, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, causing death and bodily injury.

Cause of the Crash

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is investigating exactly what happened. However, based on the information provided in news reports, it appears that the driver of the Jeep Cherokee caused this crash by departing his traffic lane and striking the Ford head-on.

Wrongful Death and Personal Injury Liability

When negligence or other wrongdoing (i.e. drunk driving) are factors in a head-on collision, the at-fault party may be held responsible for an accident in a civil claim. If the driver of the Jeep is determined to have caused this crash, as appears to be the case based on news reports, he may be liable for the wrongful death of the driver and the serious injuries of the passengers. While this July 13rh crash remains under investigation, the family members of the victims may benefit from contacting a Los Angeles auto accident attorney as soon as possible who can help them protect their legal rights and hold the at-fault driver accountable for his actions.

Avoiding Head-On Collisions in Los Angeles

Head-on collisions, one of the worst types of crashes that occur, account for only two percent (2%) of all crashes and ten percent (10%) of all fatal crashes. These crashes are also called lane departure crashes and road-departure crashes, and may be caused by wrong-way driving or unsafe passing, or any sudden maneuver that results in loss of control of a vehicle or a vehicle travelling the wrong way in traffic. Head-on collisions have been blamed on drunk driving, tire blowouts, debris in road, unsafe passing attempts, and dozens of other causes.

Some victims of head-on collisions are tragically in the wrong place at the wrong time, and have no time to avoid a head-on crash. If you are travelling on a two-lane highway and another driver going the opposite direction suddenly swerves into oncoming traffic, you may unfortunately not be able to avoid a collision. However, you can reduce your risk of causing or being involved in a head-on collision practicing the following:

• Pay attention at all times.
• Follow posted speed limits, and never travel too fast for weather conditions.
• Stay in your lane at all times.
• Don't follow the vehicle in front of you too slowly.
• Never pass on double yellow lines.
• Don't hug the center-line.
• Keep your tires properly inflated (this keeps you safe and improves fuel economy).

If you have been injured in a head-on collision on a road, street or highway in Southern California, contact the Los Angeles head-on collision accident attorneys at Estey Bomberger for more information about your rights to compensation for your injuries in a personal injury claim.

Salem, who travelling with a 1-year-old, a 3-year-old, and a 4-year-old, suffered minor injuries along with the two of the children.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Nicole Mena, and everyone who knew her and loved her. The sudden loss of a loved one in a head-on crash like this one is absolutely heartbreaking.

This is not the first fatal head-on collision on Highway 74 this year. Three people died in a head-on crash on March 9th, about a mile west of Warren Road, about 1.6 miles from the scene of the July 6th crash.

Cause of the Highway 74 Crash

If news reports are accurate, the driver of the Nissan Quest caused this July 6th crash, by driving eastbound in the westbound lane. Based on the limited information provided, it is not clear why Salem crossed over into incoming traffic; the California Highway Patrol is still investigating exactly what happened.

Fault and Wrongful Death Liability

Based on the news reports, Nicole Mena was unable to prevent this horrific head-on collision, and was not at fault for the accident. While the crash remains under investigation, her family may benefit from speaking to an experienced, aggressive Riverside wrongful death attorney, who can help hold accountable the party or parties responsible for this Highway 74 car accident. A skilled lawyer can explain to the victim's family their legal rights and options in holding the at-fault driver responsible in a wrongful death claim, and the types of damages they may be entitled to for the loss of their loved one.

Driver Facing Vehicular Manslaughter Charges After Rancho Cucamonga Man Killed in Head-On Collision

A Rancho Cucamonga resident died Sunday night after a head-on collision on Church Street in Rancho Cucamonga, police reported. The accident occurred at about 9:13 p.m. on Church Street, near the intersection of Elm Avenue. According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department, the victim, Paul Martin, 64, of Rancho Cucamonga, was driving east in his 2007 Hummer H3 on Church Street near Elm Avenue. At the same time Albert Ruiz, 23, of Rancho Cucamonga, was driving his 2005 Nissan Sentra westbound on Church Street.

ranchocucaeb.jpg

Ruiz's Nissan reportedly struck the north curb and then crossed the center median and into westbound traffic. The front of the Sentra collided with the driver's door of Martin's Hummer. Both Martin and Ruiz were transported to local hospitals. Martin died of his injuries at San Antonio Community Hospital. Ruiz was treated for minor injuries at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton and later booked on charges of Vehicular Manslaughter, PC 192(C)(1) at the West Valley Detention Center.

Cause of the Crash

The Rancho Cucamonga Major Accident Investigations Team is investigating the cause of the June 13th accident. According to the San Bernardino Sun, blood tests taken at the hospital showed Albert Ruiz's blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit. Ruiz is facing criminal charges for this accident and the resulting death of Paul Martin.

Wrongful Death Liability Considerations

In addition to the criminal charges, Ruiz may also potentially be held civilly liable and financially accountable his actions in a wrongful death claim, along with any other parties responsible for this crash. While this sadly preventable accident remains under investigation, the family of Paul Martin would be well-advised to contact a skilled California wrongful death attorney about this suspected DUI accident and the family's legal rights, and holding the at-fault driver accountable. Compensation from a wrongful death claim can include monetary damages for final medical expenses, funeral and burial expenses, anticipated future income of the decedent, and loss of love, care and companionship. In some situations where a driver is drunk, additional punitive damages may also be obtained.

Four People Hurt in Suspected DUI Crash in Morongo Valley

A 42-year-old Morongo Valley woman was arrested Monday following a three car collision on Highway 62 that injured herself and three other people, the CHP reported. According to reports in the San Bernardino Sun, the suspect, Michelle Webster, was driving her Jeep Commander southbound on Big Morongo Canyon Road when she reached the intersection of Highway 62 (Twentynine Palms Highway).

big-moroongo.jpg

Authorities believe Webster failed to yield to the right of way of a westbound 2002 Ford Focus driven by Krysta Curry, 18, of Cathedral City. The Hi-Desert Star reported that after the two vehicles collided, the Ford Focus came to rest in the eastbound lanes of the highway, where it was struck by a 2005 Toyota Corolla driven by Karen Alvarez, 31, of Yucca Valley. The Corolla subsequently struck a telephone junction box and a fence.

Webster, Curry, Alvarez and a 19-year-old passenger in the Focus were all taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs with minor to moderate injuries. The CHP stated that the air bag systems in all three of the vehicles prevented the collision from being much worse.

Cause of the Crash & Personal Injury Liability

The CHP is still investigating the cause of the crash. However, if news reports are accurate, the driver of the Jeep is at-fault for causing this collision, and is likely liable for the injuries of the driver and passenger in the Ford Focus, and the driver of the Corolla. While this accident is still under investigation, the victims hurt in this crash and their families would be well-advised to speak with a San Bernardino County personal injury attorney about their legal rights in a personal injury claim.

In addition to criminal charges for driving under the influence, the suspected drunk driver may also be liable for the injuries of the victims, including all medical expenses, lost earnings related to the accident, and emotional pain and suffering. An attorney can advise the victims of their legal rights and help the victims obtain full and fair monetary compensation for their injuries.

1 Killed, 1 Seriously Injured in Head-On Crash Near Diamond Bar

extraction-accident.jpgThe CHP is investigating a fatal head-on crash on Brea Canyon Road that left one person dead, and another with major injuries. The accident occurred just north of the Orange County / Los Angeles County line near Diamond Bar, at around 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 6. According to reports by KABC News, one vehicle, believed to have been the northbound vehicle, struck a berm on the side of the road and then swerved into oncoming traffic. At least three vehicles were involved in the collision, including a Honda Civic and a Toyota Corolla. The driver of the Honda Civic, Carlos Roberto Guillen, 33, died in the crash. Other injuries were reported.

Who Was At Fault?

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. This accident occurred on a two-lane road with no center median. Because the facts reported of this accident are limited, it is impossible to say who was at fault or why this accident occurred. Every accident is unique, and in accidents involving multiple vehicles, more than one party may be at fault. While the cause of the accident remains under investigation, the family of the victims involved in this crash may benefit from consulting with an experienced Los Angeles auto accident attorney about their legal rights in a personal injury or wrongful death claim following this head-on collision.
